“Just waiting for the dominant culture to bestow equality, recognition, and acceptance upon marginalized groups is a sucker’s bet.”

That comment was made on a story about the launch of the “People of Colo(u)r Destroy Science Fiction!” Kickstarter campaign from earlier this year. It was in response to someone else on the thread saying that being “gimmicky” is fine until you’re too gimmicky and then you “become BET.” (As if diversity and inclusion are “gimmicky.” *scoff*) I’m a firm believer in the importance of supporting the projects you’d like to see in the world so nonsensical statements like this one don’t phase me. I’m just going to keep putting my money where my mouth is. If you can afford it, you should, too. Here are a few more projects I’m supporting as we head into 2017.

Universal Fan Con
Universal Fan Con is the first multi-fandom convention dedicated to inclusion, highlighting Women, LGBTQ, the disabled and persons of color. Hosted by Black Girl Nerds and The Black Geeks, the convention is trying to raise $25,000 in seed money by  mid-January. It’s still about a year and a half out but it’s bound to be lit!

Harriet Tubman, Demon Slayer
“When slave owners can’t stop the formidable ninja warrior Harriet Tubman, they call on the help of vampires, werewolves, witches and demons to stop her.” Created by writer/actor/filmmaker David Crownson, this graphic novel blends supernatural action with the true life of Harriet Tubman, a la Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

napoTwice the First Time
Midwest BSFA member Napoleon Maddox is raising money for a behind-the-scenes book and artwork of Twice the First Time, his multimedia performance about his great grand aunts, conjoined twins, Millie-Christine McKoy. The show premieres here in Cincinnati in February before heading overseas to Paris.
