#BIPOCWitchDay is Back This Weekend

We recently found out that Noa M. (@mellodies on Instagram) is hosting #BIPOCWitchDay again this weekend! To celebrate, post your witchiest outfits online today and tomorrow, 10/22 & 10/23 and read our interview with the creator from last October!

Midwest BSFA: How did you come up with the idea for BIPOC Witch Day?
NM: Since I’ve seen Black Fae Day and BIPOC Vamp Day take off so well, I thought to myself, why not make my own day? I thought about it one day and asked my friends if I should do it. When they immediately said yes, BOOM, BIPOC Witch Day was born.

Midwest BSFA: Who are some of your favorite witch characters and why?
NM: Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service! I think we can all relate to her in terms of trying to be an adult but we struggle on the way and that failure is inevitable when we try new things but in the end, it’ll be worth it.

Midwest BSFA: What do you think keeps more people of color from getting involved in fantasy?
NM: I believe it’s fear. Whenever we want to cosplay from fantasy, sometimes we’d get pretty hurtful comments like “elves can’t be black” when elves don’t exist in real life.

Midwest BSFA: How’d you get into cosplay?
NM: I’ve always wanted to cosplay my favorite characters for a day or two, and it’s such a wonderful feeling when you finally get to do it! It’s so much fun and I’ve met many wonderful friends along the way.

Midwest BSFA: How has the pandemic affected your creativity?
NM: Oh yes, it affected me greatly. At the height of the pandemic, cons were either pushed back or cancelled all together and I lost motivation to cosplay because they were my go-to places to cosplay and I just didn’t feel any joy cosplaying at home, so I took a hiatus last December.

Midwest BSFA: What do you hope to achieve with #BIPOCWitchDay?
NM: I honestly don’t see a lot of BIPOC witches in the media and when we do, they’re either killed early or fade into obscurity. I want to show that BIPOC witches do exist and we’d like better representation.

Midwest BSFA: Anything else you want our readers to know?
NM: I hope y’all can participate on this day, but if not there’s always next year!
