The Fae of the Shade Meetup at ORen
A few weekends ago, we had the pleasure of attending the Black Fae Day meetup at the Ohio Renaissance Festival during Fantasy Weekend as the BFD founders Jasmine and Carlos introduced their official ren faire guild, Fae of the Shade! Check out the photos from the meetup, courtesy of NyteVisions Photography.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the Black Fae Day meetup! The rain held off and we were able to frolic in Mt. Airy Arboretum without worrying about getting soaked. ๐ง๐พ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ We looked around for a different place to hold this year’s meetup but ultimately decided to go back to the Arboretum – it really is the PERFECT place for this kind of event. Thanks to our amazing photographers Teddie Parker of Teddie P, Co., Salim Williams of NyteVisions Photography, Brittney Johnson of Happy Bubbles Images and Aren Hageman-Johnson! (Note: Photos will be posted here as we receive them.)

SAVE THE DATE: Black Fae Day 2022 Meetup
You’ve got four months to plan your outfit for Midwest BSFA’s 2022 Black Fae Day meetup on May 14! According to the BFD creator, this year’s theme is “Land vs. Sea”! Are you an elf or a mermaid? An orc or a siren? Whatever you’re choosing, you’d better get kraken! (Get it? Kraken? OK, we’ll see ourselves out.)
Black Fae Day Creator Talks Sankofa Solstice (Sept. 25)
We talked to Jasmine La Fleur (aka Halcyon Crowe), the creator of Black Fae Day! This weekend, she and her fae following are celebrating the Sankofa Solstice, the virtual wrap-up event for the 2021 Black Fae Day season.
Midwest BSFA: How did you come up with the idea for #BlackFaeDay and the Sankofa Solstice?
La Fleur: I was scrolling through all the cosplays from #28DaysOfBlackCosplay in February and didnโt want the magic to end. For the last couple of birthdays, Iโve done something special for myself. Over quarantine lockdown I had a โcostzoomโ party with my family and wanted to replicate that fun. I knew Twitter had the potential to send my dream to many different people, but I had little social media presence. I only knew that the best case scenario would be social media flooding with positive images of Black people in fantasy and fairytale cosplay.
Meetup for Black Fae Day 2021

Black Fae Day on May 8 was an absolute blast! Y’all, we had a Black ass good time at our meetup. There were some familiar faces and some new folks, and the turnout was great – everyone was just vibin on some geeky fae DnD energy. While there were plenty of places around the city where we could have met, Mt. Airy Arboretum in Mt. Airy Forest was the absolute best choice for this type of shoot. We owe a HUGE thanks to all of the photographers, some of whose work is showcased in this post; they showed up and showed out!
We’re just so happy with how everything turned out…and we beat the rain AND the cicadas! *does cartwheel* Enjoy these photos and start getting your costume together for next year’s event!
