October Black Sci-Fi Book Club Wrap-Up

On Oct. 21, we held the second installment of our Black Sci-Fi Book Club, featuring writer and Cincinnati native Dani McClain! She discussed her story “Homing Instinct” in the anthology, Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. It was an honor to have one of the anthology’s contributors and a hometown girl walking us through her story and what Octavia Butler’s legacy means to her. A small group came out to Sweet Sistah Splash to discuss the story, their interest in speculative fiction, their favorite authors and more.

Black to the Future Program Wrap-Up

facebook_-265051031Last Tuesday’s “Black to the Future: Afrofuturistic Music” program at Sweet Sistah Splash was the Midwest BSFA’s first activity of the year, and we couldn’t have planned for a better group of participants! There was something electric in the air as about 20 attendees from all walks of life discussed the meaning of Afrofuturism and how it applies to music. It was the kind of experience I hope we can have many more times in the months to come!

Black to the Future: Afrofuturistic Music

Black-to-the-Future
Afrofuturism
is an emergent literary and cultural aesthetic that combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, Afrocentricity, and magic realism with non-Western cosmologies in order to critique not only the present-day dilemmas of people of color, but also to revise, interrogate, and re-examine the historical events of the past. From Sun Ra to Janelle Monae, African-Americans have experimented with music with Afrofuturistic flair. Writer Mildred Fallen (host of Deeper than Atlantis: Diggin’ In Da Crates on Soul Public Radio) and Napoleon Maddox of hip-hop jazz band IsWhat?! will explore this soundscape and its inhabitants.
